Prerequisites: You own a camera which has some amount of manual control. You want to learn how to use it better.

Description: Camera Fundamentals is a basic introduction to the manual controls and specifications of your camera. The class covers the following topics:

  • Focal length
  • Sensor size
  • Aperture
  • Shutter speed
  • Depth of field
  • ISO
  • Metering methods
  • File formats
  • Further reading

The class lasts approximately two hours, and will be followed by a 1-hour photo walkabout with the instructor for those who wish to join. The class is structured as a number of 10-20 minute lessons broken up by 5 minute breaks to experiment with the topic just introduced. It is intended to be very hands-on, and is not aimed at professional photographers. Rather, this is a class for anyone who wants to understand their camera better, particularly when it comes to the manual controls and what they do.
